US Woman Charged with Murder of Spouse After Writing Book on Grief

US: A widow from Utah who, after her husband’s unexpected death, penned a children’s book about grieving was detained on murder charges on Monday. Kouri Darden Richins, 33, of Summit County was reportedly detained on Monday for allegedly poisoning her husband, Eric Richins, on March 4, 2022, at their house on Willow Court in Kamas, according to a KUTV report. A first-degree aggravated murder allegation has been brought against the mother of three. According to authorities, the lady is also facing three second-degree felonies for possessing a controlled narcotic with the intent to distribute.

On the night of Eric’s death, the police reportedly arrived at their residence at around 3:20 am and discovered him lying at the foot of the bed. Documents reported by KSL-TV state that “life-saving measures were attempted, but Eric was declared deceased.” According to a BBC article, Ms. Richins reported that her husband, Eric Richins, was “cold to the touch” in March 2022 by calling the police late one night. She claimed to have given her husband a mixed vodka cocktail before discovering him unconscious hours later, according to the authorities. Later, a coroner discovered that Mr. Richins had overdosed on fentanyl. According to the medical examiner, Mr. Richins had five times the amount of the medication required to be lethal in his system.

Court Records Reveal Eric Richins Sought Prescription Pain Medication for Back Injury Investor

According to court records, Mr. Richins texted a person who had been detained for narcotics charges between December 2021 and February 2022 to request prescription pain medicine for a back injury investor. The court records also showed that Ms. Richins initially wanted pills of hydrocodone but afterwards requested something stronger. He became ill after the couple had a Valentine’s Day supper and Ms Richins took the medications for three days. Two weeks later, Ms. Richins acquired additional fentanyl. On March 4, Ms. Richins complained to the police over the phone about her husband’s lack of responsiveness. In order to assist kids in coping with the loss of a loved one, Ms. Richins also authored the picture book “Are You With Me?”

The mother said that the book will provide her and her three children peace in an interview with KPCW. She stated in an interview last month, “We wrote this book and we’re really hoping that it provides some comfort for not just obviously our family, but other families that are going through the same thing.” On May 19, a detention hearing is planned.
