On July 8, the Indian community in Toronto, Canada, organised a protest with the flag of their country to oppose a pro-Khalistani protest outside the Indian consulate. The Indian community conducted a counter-demonstration and waved the Indian Tricolour to make their point clear as Khalistani supporters stood outside the consulate with their flags.
A group of Khalistani supporters can be seen standing on one side of the road and waving Khalistani flags in a video posted by the news agency ANI. One of the individuals wearing a turban is also seen desecrating the flag in the footage.
The Indian diaspora staged a counter-protest outside the Indian consulate on the opposite side of the street while carrying a sign that stated, “Khalistanis are not Sikhs” and waving the Indian national flag. Indians who live in Canada also sung “Jai Bharat Mata” and “Vande Mataram.”
Posters of SFJ commander Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was killed on June 18 in Surrey, British Columbia, were displayed by the Khalistani organisation. The banners claimed that India was responsible for the murder. Indian law enforcement said Nijjar was the leader of the Khalistan Tiger Force and he was accused of many terrorism-related offences.
Canadian Khalistanis started their protest by erecting a placard near a Hindu temple in Brampton, Ontario, overnight. The place is described as a “War Zone”. Khalistanis used the term “faces of Shaheed Nijjar’s killing in Canada” to refer to senior Indian diplomats stationed in Canada.
