After distressing video of a Los Angeles County deputy throwing a woman to the ground and spraying her with pepper spray went viral on social media, an investigation was launched. According to a story in Fox News, the event happened on June 24 in front of the WinCo supermarket in Lancaster.
Police were allegedly apprehending a guy and a woman who were suspected of stealing from the store.
Man is seen being handcuffed by a police officer while a woman records the entire incident on camera. Later, the officer approaches the woman, seizes her, and throws her to the ground. Later, he even sprays her face with pepper spray. Before the constable slams her, the woman cries out and begs him not to touch her. “Don’t slam her down like that,” the In the video, the arrested man tells the police, adding that the wife has cancer.
Cop Throws Black Woman on Ground in California
The police is struggling to restrain the woman on the ground as another person who is filming the situation yells at him to stop. The location of the officer’s knee—on her neck or back—remains unknown.
According to Fox News, the individual who took the video, Lisa Michelle Garrett, claims to have worked in security in the past. She started filming the entire thing as soon as she saw many loss-prevention officers escorting the man and woman out of the supermarket. The woman in the video was heard on Ms. Garrett’s account telling the media outlet, “I can’t breathe.”
In a statement about the incident, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department stated that an investigation is still ongoing.
“The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has opened an investigation into this incident. While the Department does not make statements related to ongoing investigations, Sheriff Luna has made it clear that he expects Department personnel to treat all members of the public with dignity and respect, and that personnel who do not uphold our training standards will be held accountable. In the interest of transparency with our community, the Sheriff’s Department is releasing body-worn camera video from the incident.”
Although the department has not yet revealed the identities of the officers in the video, it has said that both have been suspended from field duty while the investigation is ongoing.
