Weisselberg, longtime Trump CFO, sentenced to 5 months in prison for tax fraud

For his part in the vast tax fraud that the former president’s real estate company committed, Allen Weisselberg, a longtime Trump Organization executive and the key witness for the prosecution in the Trump Organization’s criminal trial, was sentenced to five months in jail on Tuesday.

Weisselberg, 75, entered into a plea agreement with the prosecution in August and was given a 15-count prison sentence at Rikers Island in New York. The former CFO of the Trump Organization admitted that he and other executives received incentives and benefits that were fraudulent to the company and to themselves between 2005 and 2017, and that he did not pay taxes on $1.76 million of revenue.
At a trial presided over by Justice Juan Merchan in a New York state court in Manhattan last month, The Trump Organization was found guilty on all counts.

At the sentencing hearing on Tuesday, Merchan stated that he would have given Weisselberg a substantially lengthier sentence based on the trial testimony had he not accepted a five-month sentence last August as a result of the plea agreement.

Merchan singled up Weisselberg for hiring his wife so she could earn ill-gotten Social Security benefits. The Weisselbergs received other benefits, such as a lavish Manhattan residence and numerous Mercedes-Benz vehicles.
Even though Weisselberg was already “making over seven figures,” Merchan added, “the court considers it so insulting because it was driven by greed.”

As part of his penalty, Weisselberg also paid nearly $2 million in taxes, fines, and interest.
After the hearing, Weisselberg’s attorney, Nicholas Gravante, said that he and the Trump Organization, where he had worked for over 50 years, had “amicably parted ways.”

Requests for response from The Trump Organization were not immediately fulfilled. The corporation will receive a sentencing from Merchan on Friday, but the maximum fine is only $1.6 million.
