White House: On Monday, the White House condemned as “completely unacceptable” and “antithetical to the very principles of democracy” the online abuse of a journalist who had questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his State visit to the United States. During the joint press conference with US President Joe Biden, Sabrina Siddiqui of the Wall Street Journal questioned PM Modi about the government’s efforts to advance the rights of Muslims and other minorities in India.
White House Condemns Online Harassment of Journalist
In response, PM Modi had stated, “Democracy runs in our veins,” and added, “There is absolutely no space for discrimination on the basis of caste, creed, or religion.” Sabrina Siddiqui had been “subjected to some intense online harassment from people inside India,” according to journalist Kelly O’Donnell, who added that “some of them are politicians,” during a press conference on Monday. The reporter wanted to know how the White House felt about the harassment. ohn Kirby, Coordinator for Strategic Communications at the National Security Council, said that “We’re aware of the reports of that harassment. It’s unacceptable. And we absolutely condemn any harassment of journalists anywhere under any circumstances… And it’s antithetical to the very principles of democracy that – that – you’re right – were on display last week during the state visit.”
Returns to India After US and Egypt Visit
When asked about the government’s efforts to advance the rights of Muslims and other minorities, Prime Minister Narendra Modi responded that there was “absolutely no space for discrimination in India” during a press conference on Friday, June 23. In response to a query from a US journalist, he stated, “We are a democracy… Democracy is in the DNA of both India and America. Our Constitution is written in the spirit of democracy, which is something we actively practise. Discrimination on the basis of caste, creed, or religion has no place at all. On Sunday night, Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived back in India after his trip to the US and Egypt.
